The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
