In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
