Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice late to take a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing shootout victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
