Rising Rhetorical Battle Among Ethiopia and Eritrea Triggers Concerns of Conflict

Growing worries exist regarding the chance of warfare among East African neighbours, the Ethiopian government and the Eritrean government, as hostile language has ratcheted up in the last month.

Ethiopia and Eritrea were allies in the armed struggle in Tigray but they have later become estranged.

What Did Ethiopia Declared?

Ethiopia's, being landlocked, requests for entry to the sea coast through Eritrean territory has sparked a intense verbal exchange.

The Ethiopian leader first openly declared in 2023 that his government's maritime access was an existential matter, remarks that Eritrean authorities dismissed.

Relations between the two countries have frequently been strained. After a prolonged struggle for freedom, Eritrea, which has a long maritime frontage, officially seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, making it cut off from the sea.

In 1998, a border war broke out in which numerous people died.

Current Comments from Ethiopian Leadership

Abiy and military leader Field Marshal Birhanu Jula have publicly asserted ownership of Eritrean maritime facility of Assab – approximately 60 kilometers from the boundary - and implied the intention to take it by force.

In early September, the Prime Minister said the country's "error" of being denied passage to the sea as a due to Eritrea secession would be "corrected soon".

Ethiopia's ambassador to Kenya, retired Gen Bacha Debele, said that the port was "belonging to Ethiopia" and would be returned "using武力".

Eritrea's Reaction to the Statements

In the face of persistent warnings from Ethiopia, Eritrea's reaction has been limited to concise remarks on social media from Communications Head the minister.

The minister has dismissed Ethiopian requests for access to the Red Sea calling it "risky" and a "negative policy" of "irredentism" – a strategy of retaking lost territory.

Government spokespeople cautioned on recently that moves to justify "blatant hostility" would have major implications for Ethiopia and its neighbors and is a "limit that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Military Preparations on the Region

Currently, there are little evidence of significant troop deployments in the boundary zones between the neighboring states.

Nevertheless, in Ethiopia, government media has broadcast graduation ceremonies of many recruits at various military training camps.

The director of personnel division of the military, Lt Gen Hachalu Sheleme, commented lately in an conversation that the defense forces was in a "strong stance" as "many thousands of youths" were joining it, which he said was "a signal to our adversaries".

Previous Background of the Tension

For over fifty years from 1890, Eritrea was administered by Italian colonisers.

Following the end of Italian rule, it was then administered by the British administration before becoming a integrated region of Ethiopia.

Yet in 1962 the ruler cancelled this arrangement and the region became fully incorporated into the Ethiopian state.

A three-decade long internal conflict followed, concluding with the government's loss in 1991. Autonomy was then endorsed by Eritreans in a plebiscite in 1993.

For a few years in the 1990s, there were good relations between the governments in Ethiopia's capital and Asmara, but they fell out over the exact location of their common border, causing war in 1998.

Even though this ended in a ceasefire agreement in 2000, it was incompletely executed, and the neighbors continued at odds.

This situation improved in 2018, when the Prime Minister made overtures to Eritrean President President Isaias. The two signed a statement that the hostilities was over – a decision that won Abiy the Nobel Peace Prize.

The neighboring states were then cooperators in the country's 2020-2022 internal conflict in Tigray.

But diplomatic connections have since broken down once more.
