Much like Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the night before, the home side swept United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal win for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive Women's Super League setbacks for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since May 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s capability to juggle league and European football with a small team has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a handful of changes. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such workload concerns. Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his squad from the kickoff. This was a show of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic attack manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half showing that saw them put three past the keeper in just over twenty minutes.

Early Chances

Goals Galore
